Our Journey to Writing Allies
Jan 09, 2025Hi there, allow me to introduce myself. I’m Kim Le Bas, an educator with over thirty years experience in both the classroom and as an administrator. When I was a child, I struggled with dyslexia. I watched words dance across pages, building walls between me and the joy of learning. Now, having taught across five states and two countries, I've made it my mission to help other children overcome the barriers I experienced and help them find the joy in learning.
This is why me and my son, Rene, founded Writing Allies.
The seeds of Writing Allies were planted in different soils. For Rene, it was the enchanting worlds of Redwall and Artemis Fowl that sparked a lifelong passion for storytelling. That spark led him to become a professional scriptwriter. For me, it was the transformation I witnessed as both a teacher and school administrator, seeing how creative expression could ignite a child's potential across all areas of learning.
Why Writing Allies?
During my own education, strict formats, prescribed processes, and fear of the dreaded red-pen corrections prevented me from finding a love of writing at a young age. In my career as an educator and administrator, I have seen the same rigid processes make even the most enthusiastic young writer second-guess their creative instincts. While structure has its place, we've seen how this approach can stifle a writer’s natural storytelling voice and intuitive creativity.
This is where parents come in. Sometimes, the most powerful learning moments happen outside the classroom, either in the safe space where parent and child can explore creativity together, or in the restful time when children process the information they’ve learned throughout the day. However, many parents feel ill-equipped to guide their children's creative writing journey, unsure how to nurture that spark.
Whether you’re homeschooling your child, or just wanting to nurture your child’s passion for storytelling, Writing Allies is here to help.
Building on Experience
Our approach at Writing Allies draws on a unique combination of professional expertise. Rene brings ten years of experience running creative writing workshops through organizations like the Emerging Artists Trust, along with his time teaching scriptwriting at the university level. I contribute three decades of experience in education across public and private schools, understanding both the classroom dynamics and the system-level challenges of teaching writing.
Together, we've created an online program specifically designed for parents of 8-12 year olds who want to help their children discover the joy in writing. We're not about grammar drills or five-paragraph essays. Instead, we provide parents with the tools and confidence to become their child's creative writing ally, fostering an environment where storytelling flourishes and learning becomes an adventure.
Our own journeys have taught us that every child has stories to tell. Sometimes they just need the right allies to help them find their voice.
Join us at Writing Allies, where we're building a community of parents and young writers, one story at a time.
